First Graders "Step Right Up!"
Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:06PM Tiffany, Nancy the Art Teacher and Beth the Librarian, recently collaborated on a fun project in First Grade. Here's what we did:
1. We read the Red Clover Book, Sandy's Circus, by Tanya Lee Stone, illustrated by Boris Kulikow. This is a story about Alexander Calder and the circus that he created out of found objects.
2. We studied the circus and made characters figure drawings.
3. Each 1st grader chose two elements from the circus (like lion tamer and tent). They made watercolor
illustrations of those elements.
4. We collected found objects galore: bottle caps, clementine crate netting...you name it.
5. We made our circus figures out of those found objects.
6. Stay tuned for: a bulletin board display outside of the First Grade AND a movie made about the circus (on this very blog).

Tah-Dah! Our completed circus!
