We've just had two weeks of a castle-building in the Library- it's a Kindergarten Expert group...and it has been FUN. (Who needs to travel to England to see castles!?) Here are some photos:

We're starting to read the 10 Red Clover Books. In April, each K - 4 student will vote for their favorite. We'll find out which one is the Lincoln Community School favorite and which one is the State of Vermont's favorite. Ask your student which Red Clover books is their favorite so far. Kindergarten is a Regular Publishing Company!!

We realized that the kindergarten class is a regular publishing company - they've been making plenty of books! Our latest was the What's Missing? book that kindergarteners made. They had a bag of objects that they would set up, then one object would be taken away. The reader would need to study the page and decide what is missing. Here's one spread from the book:

Second Grade Makes A Bee Waggle Dance Animation

Here's the animation project that the Second Grade just completed as part of their bee unit. It's about the Bee Waggle Dance. It's fantastic.

First Graders "Step Right Up!"

Tiffany, Nancy the Art Teacher and Beth the Librarian, recently collaborated on a fun project in First Grade. Here's what we did:

1. We read the Red Clover Book, Sandy's Circus, by Tanya Lee Stone, illustrated by Boris Kulikow. This is a story about Alexander Calder and the circus that he created out of found objects.

2. We studied the circus and made characters figure drawings.

3. Each 1st grader chose two elements from the circus (like lion tamer and tent). They made watercolor

illustrations of those elements.

4. We collected found objects galore: bottle caps, clementine crate netting...you name it.

5. We made our circus figures out of those found objects.

6. Stay tuned for: a bulletin board display outside of the First Grade AND a movie made about the circus (on this very blog).

First Grade goes Hollywood! Please watch two movies that some first graders made. One is about Leo Lionni and the other is about a relative newcomer - Oliver Jeffers. We studied the books that they made and used a flip camera to make these short movies.

In Library Literacy Collaboration time a few weeks ago, we broke up into three groups. Each group read a classic version of a fairy tale. One read Rapunzel, another The Three Pigs and the last, Cinderella. Then each group wrote and illustrated a next chapter to each of these fairy tales. Come see them in the library.

Each of the Early Reading Kindergarten Groups made a story. Here's the equation: one character (a small toy) + a camera + a setting in the story+ a plot (the character is trying to find something to do.) Here is the first group's story, featuring "Little Lady."
