Lincoln Action Plan -- Network Acquisition Goals and Costs


  • To expand dial-up Internet access from a single connection to multiple connections.
  • Option A. Add a proxie server and VICOM software. This allows 5 simultaneous users on a single telephone line. These figures include the cost of a hub, network cards, and cabling and assumes that a network server is not purchased, as specified in Goal 2. This option might be desirable as a first step toward achieving Internet access in each classroom. Purchase of a file server as noted in Goal 2 could be a later phase.

  • To create a local area network. Network existing machines and purchase a network server. (Assumes that personnel is hired to support this goal.)   • To create a mini-lab which consists of twelve networked computers and a laser printer. This lab would be used for classroom instruction and would provide a computer lab for community access and instructional programs. With the addition of these computers, the computer to student ratio within the school would be four students to every one computer (4:1). Classroom teachers would be able to take an entire class to the lab, although two students would need to share one computer.
